Ethan Couch–a wealthy TX teen–just got sentenced to probation for a quadruple manslaughter via DUI. His sentence of 10 years of probation instead of the prosecutor-suggested 20 years in jail, is due to Judge Jean Boyde believing that Couch was suffering from a fictional psychological condition called “affluenza.”
Affluenza is the creation of Dr. G. Dick Miller, and is the idea that rich people can become incapable of assessing the consequences of their actions if they are raised in an environment where they get everything that they want and are never consequenced. Because they are unable to assess their actions, Miller argues that they deserve treatment rather than jail time when they break the law.
Put simply, this sentence is a travesty and indicative that the US justice system is broken–the wealthy live in a world where they can do virtually anything and are allowed to skate by without consequences while the poor are crushed in a draconian prison system. We need reform and to put the justice back in our justice system.
Time Magazine has picked Pope Francis to be the 2013 Person of the Year. While I like Pope Francis and see him as a great role-model, I think that Edward Snowden deserved the title.
Snowden revealed massive criminal activity on the part of the US government and has caused the start of an international conversation of spying–to compound this, he sacrificed his security and personal safety to do this when he made an enemy of the most powerful world government (that has drones, rendition, and a massive spying complex).
Progressives oftentimes compromise with the GOP and let our policies get diluted in a spirit of finding common ground. We must stop doing this by adopting the sentiment of these two quotes, from the mind of the right wing’s most unreasonable and vicious ideologues: Ayn Rand.
“If men reject logic, then the tie between their mental processes and reality is severed; all cognitive standards are repudiated, and anything goes; any contradiction, on any subject, may be endorsed (and simultaneously rejected) by anyone, as and when he feels like it.”
“Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it. Do not count on them. Leave them alone.”
Right wingers have let their ideology blind them to reality, thus are incapable of seeing reason or fact-based arguments against their positions–as such, progressives need to convince Democrats to leave these lunatics in the corner to rant while implementing good policy and refusing to meet lunatics half-way between insanity and good public policy.
The deterioration of non-political decisions of judges and Justices play heavily on these issues as well. We now have a Supreme Court, whose radical legislating from the bench, has set the affluent even more above the law.
